New York State Awards $4 Million Grant to Upgrade Bowline Point Park in Town of Haverstraw
New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Commissioner Kathy Moser joined local officials to announce $4 million in discretionary State capital funding has been awarded to the Town of Haverstraw to replace the aging pool complex bathhouse at Bowline Point Park. Built in 1973, the bathhouse has served generations of families and is long overdue for an upgrade.
“Bowline Point Park is a place where families can ‘Get Offline and Get Outside’ to gather, play, and make lasting memories,” Governor Hochul said. “This investment is about more than replacing a building. Bowline Point's swimming complex provides an affordable summer destination for local families, while also serving town and village day camps and not-for-profit organizations. This funding will help ensure Bowline Point Park remains one of Rockland County's most treasured waterfront destinations.”
Once part of Haverstraw's thriving brickmaking industry, Bowline Point Park has incredible views of the Hudson River, expansive green space, and wonderful recreational facilities. The pool complex features an Olympic-size pool with a diving well and wading area, two water slides, a toddler pool, playgrounds, and accessible water spray area.
“Under Governor Hochul's leadership, we're committed to preserving these treasured spaces and expanding recreational opportunities for all New Yorkers,” State Parks Commissioner Moser said. “This investment will help ensure Bowline Point Park remains a place for families to enjoy for generations to come.”
“Bowline Point Park is an important recreational resource for families across North Rockland, and this funding will help ensure it continues to serve residents for years to come,” Assemblymember Patrick Carroll said. “I thank Governor Hochul for her continued commitment to supporting our communities and expanding access to outdoor recreation.”
“Bowline Point Park has been a treasured part of Haverstraw for generations, providing families with affordable recreation and a place to come together,” Town of Haverstraw Supervisor Howard Phillips said. “This $4 million investment will help modernize our pool complex and ensure families can enjoy this beautiful waterfront park for years to come. I thank Governor Hochul for her continued partnership and commitment to our community.”
Today’s announcement complements Governor Hochul’s Unplug and Play Initiative. Unplug and Play is making statewide investments in recreational infrastructure that give children and families more opportunities to be active, spend time outdoors, and connect with one another. In addition to NY PLAYS, the initiative includes the Statewide Investment in More Swimming (NY SWIMS), which has awarded nearly $260 million to 79 projects to build and improve swimming facilities across New York State, and Building Recreational Infrastructure for Communities, Kids and Seniors (NY BRICKS), which has awarded $100 million to 30 community center projects. An additional $75 million has been made available for a second round of NY BRICKS funding. The NY PLAYS initiative is overseen by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York.
